A practice with one side
This is a neutral practice. There is no litigation book, no client list on either side of the docket, and no case waiting on the other end of the hall.
In a county where the same names have represented most of the parties at one point or another, that is worth checking against. Counsel bringing a matter here does not have to work out which cases the neutral has been adverse in, or which firm the neutral is across from next month.
What to weigh instead of a brochure
Mediation is a process, not a verdict, and the useful questions about a neutral are practical ones: does the process hold when the room gets difficult, do the parties leave with an agreement they wrote themselves, and does the mediator keep the session moving without pushing a number.
Those questions are answered by counsel who have sat in a session. Ask for a reference before booking one.
Why one person does both
Mediation and organizational consulting are the same discipline applied at different moments. One resolves the dispute that is already in front of the parties. The other works on the conditions underneath it.
Organizations that have been through both usually find the second one is what kept the first from repeating.
